GlamourKeys "Terms to Know" for the Movie, Broadcast and Post-Production Industry
Alpha Channel
Specifies how a pixel should be merged when its put over another pixel. GlamourKey™ protects each pixel by giving you the straight alpha channel. When our content is placed in third party editors such as Final Cut Pro, Avid, Motion, After Effects or Flash - straight alpha gives you accurate color information around the edges of the subject. Better keys, better quality. Remember - until you put it in your editor its going to look a little alien. (We provide a low-cost TGA for you to test in your project - try it, we think youll like how it works).
Aspect ratio
The ratio of image width to height. Thanks to the RED ONE Digital Camera, GlamourKey is focused on outstanding 2K (2:1) and 4K (2:1) imagery.
Chroma
Short for chrominance. Chroma is the color component of the video signal.
Chroma Key
The subject or model is filmed against a background consisting of a single color or a relatively narrow range of colors, usually blue or green because these colors, on a color spectrum are considered to be the furthest away from skin tone. The sections of the footage that match the preselected color, are made transparent allowing an аlternate scene or video clip to be played behind the subject or model. This process is commonly known as "keying", "keying out" or simply a "key". GlamourKey uses green because image sensors in digital video cameras are most sensitive to green, due to the "Bayer pattern" which allocates more pixels to the green channel, mimicking an increased sensitivity to green light. The green camera channel contains the least "noise" and can produce the cleanest key / matte / mask. Furthermore, less light is needed to illuminate green, again due to the higher sensitivity to green in a cameras image sensors.
CMOS
Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor is the image sensor used in the RED ONE Digital Camera.
Depth of field
The distance range from the camera lens at which objects are sharply in focus. This distance varies based on the length of the lens or the amount of zoom.
DPX
This format is used in Motion Picture and Effects industry as a Digital Intermediate. It is extremely flexible in its ability to handle high dynamic range and logarithmic color values at a variety of bit depths using RGB or YCbCr pixel descriptions. Heres a note of interest, all GlamourKey pre-keyed footage uses DPX files in our process to help protect color start to finish.
Exposure
The different modes the camera provides for controlling the amount of light which comes through the lens.
Focal length
The distance from the center of the camera lens to the object of focus.
FPS
The number of frames played every second. The standard film frame rate is 24 fps. Shooting higher than these rates will result in slow-motion footage and shooting lower will result in fast-motion. GlamourKey Footage is shot at 23.98 fps, which fits into any creative project.
Frame Rate (Frame Frequency)
The measurement or rate at which an imaging device produces unique consecutive images also known as frames. This term equally applies to computer generated graphics, film cameras, video cameras, as well as motion capture systems. Frame rate is typically expressed in frames per second (FPS). All GlamourKey footage is shot at 23.98 fps (frames per second).
Frame
A single image that represents the movie at a given point in time. When several of these images are played in sequence, they create the effect of real motion. Each RAW GlamourKey 4K frame is 4096 x 2048.
GlamourPop
A GlamourPop is a surprising piece of video that puts increased pizzaz and style into your project. Our models work with a prop that we crop out in our production process. The example below shows how a GlamourPop can be seamlessly integrated into the final creative. Some GlamourPops can also be looped using a technique called "ping ponging." Play the clip until you get to the end, then simply reverse it and start over. You'll see an example of "ping ponging" on the promotion at the top of our home page. One more quick note - our GlamourPops are "cut off" directly below the model. This gives you space to put your own logo or product in its place. We hope you enjoy using our GlamourPops. Please let us know what you think.
Green screen compositing
The process of making all green elements in an image transparent and placing a different background underneath. This is our speciality at GlamourKey.
Hue
The shade of a color. The general color category that the color falls into.
Keying
An industry term for compositing two images together using mattes created from color information (also known as chroma key), brightness information (also known as luma key), the difference between the two images (also known as difference key) or by using a manually-created matte.
Letterbox
The process of fitting a 16:9 image on a 4:3 screen by placing black lines at the top and bottom.
Lossless
A compression scheme that results in no loss of data from the file. Lossless files are generally quite large (but still smaller than uncompressed versions) and sometimes require considerable processing power in order to decode the data.
Luma key
The process of creating a matte from data related to the brightness of certain areas in an image.
Luminance
A measure of the brightness or intensity of each pixel in an image.
Matte
An image mask that is used in visual effects to control which parts of the image the effect will be applied to.
MOS
Most GlamourKey footage has no sound. Shooting without recording sound.
Opacity
A measure of the transparency (or lack of) in an image, which is important when compositing. This information is stored in an image's alpha channel.
Pixel
The smallest item of information making up the building blocks of all digital footage or images. Pixels are normally arranged in a 2-dimensional grid, and are often represented using dots, squares, or rectangles.
QuickTime
Cross-platform video compression software developed by Apple used extensively by video professionals on the Macintosh platform.
r3d
The format of RED Raw footage. In other words - r3d = RED. Resolution The amount of data used to make up a digital video or audio file, specified as the number of pixels. Can also be used for audio when referring to number of bits.
RAW
A format directly from the camera used for extensive post-production manipulation. RED offers RED Alert allowing you to see RED Raw as a DPX image sequence or a QuickTime Movie. If you want to purchase a Raw file from us, it gives you the ability to do extensive post production.
RED ONE Digtial Camera
RED wanted to go beyond HD. The RED ONE Digital Camera offers 2K, 3K and 4K recording options. RED uses a 4520 x 2540 pixel sensor - currently more than 4 times the number of pixels of todays very best HD cam.
Saturation
The strength or amount of a certain color present in a television picture; saturation is expressed as the purity of the color. Tracking The process of tracing the movement of a particular pixel or pattern on screen in order to determine how the camera or object is moving.
